This is what I love to find every time I walk through the door to start a newborn session.

Not perfection—just real life, as it actually is. Parents getting on with the business of looking after their baby, while I quietly find the beauty in all of it.

The feeding. The winding. The cuddles. The tears. Real life, exactly as it is. And somewhere in the middle of it all are the photographs that will mean the most years from now.

First newborn sessions are always special to me—not because of the baby alone, but because of what's unfolding in front of me. The beginning of a new family life. That overwhelming, slightly terrifying, completely consuming love that arrives the moment they do.

Some babies carry even more of a story. When this lovely mum told me about the journey that brought her little boy into the world, I had a lump in my throat. Some babies are longed for in ways that words can't quite reach. This gorgeous little fella was one of those.

If you've ever wondered what an at-home newborn session is actually like, it's a lot simpler than people imagine.

There's no studio. No posing. No trying to look like you have it all together — because honestly, that's not what makes these photographs worth keeping.

I come to you. You get to keep your slippers on. The baby does whatever the baby does. And I just follow the light and whatever's happening in front of me.

Most families tell me afterwards that it felt nothing like a photoshoot. That's exactly the point.
